The Unicorn Crosses a Stream (from the Unicorn Tapestries)

French (cartoon)/South Netherlandish (woven)

On view at The Met Cloisters in Gallery 17

The unicorn's attempt to throw the dogs off its scent by plunging into a stream has failed, and the self-assured hunters ready their spears for attack. Not far from the castle, all are dressed in fine, elaborate clothes. There is a kind of controlled chaos to the scene, intensified if one imagines the sound of the hunting horns, held by men at either side. Birds take flight as the waters of the stream are churned up by the dogs, one of which takes a moment to drink.

The knotted initials A and E, which appear in all the Unicorn Tapestries, are here joined by intertwined F and R, a later addition.
