Positioned between two windows with a carefully rendered Chinese porcelain vase, this revival-style fireplace used specific ornamentation to reference the past. In particular, the green and gold lambrequin, or short decorative drapery, draws inspiration from those first found on Dutch fireplaces of the seventeenth century. These fabric accessories became popular in the United States in the 1880s, when they were often attached to mantels to obscure styles that were viewed at outdated or ugly. The unusual placement of this lambrequin, directly above the fireplace instead of covering the mantel, suggests that the designers intended to highlight the fireplace as a focal point of the room.
