The Angel Gabriel

Possibly by Masseo Civitali

Not on view

Masseo was the nephew of the better-known Matteo Civitali. This angel would have addressed itself to a companion figure of the Virgin Mary, the two forming an Annunication group. They are believed to have been in the oratory of Santa Maria dell'Annunziata in Lucca, which was enlarged in 1493.
