Exeter’s male citizens were responsible for the safety of the city and its residents. Those of means kept a store of weaponry and armor in their homes. Daggers—such as this one with its suggestive masculinity—were part of everyday wear, carried as fashionable accessories, practical tools, and a means of self-protection.
