This dish is from a group of rare examples of Chinese painted enamel made for the Japanese market. Written in archaic seal script, the mark on the bottom reads: “made in the period of Man’en.” The period of Man’en, a reign of the Japanese Emperor Komei (1831–1867), only spanned from 1860 through 1861, which helps to date this dish.
