Man Weighing Gold

Adriaen Isenbrant Netherlandish

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 612

Though there are no recorded portraits of Henry Hamlyn, this painting—which likely depicts a merchant from Bruges—gives some sense of the appearance of prosperous men in sixteenth-century Europe. This portrait is among the first to feature a non-aristocratic professional, illustrating the growing power and identity-shaping capabilities of the middle class.
