Cypress in Moonlight

Edvard Munch Norwegian

Not on view

The tall, narrow cypress that dominates this scene stands alone amidst a series of pairs: potted plants on the windowsill, illuminated windows spied across the way, and human figures in the street. Munch reconfigured these elements in another painting from his early years in France, the iconic Kiss by the Window from 1892 (Nasjonalmuseet, Oslo). The prominence given to the lone tree suggests a comparison with works by Vincent van Gogh, notably The Met's Cypresses (49.30), which Munch may have seen when it was exhibited in Paris in the early 1890s.
