Sculpted portraits were frequently venerated in the residential quarters of Zen temples. There, the works provided a physical reminder of the deceased founder and his teachings. The identity of the man who sat for this sculpture remains unknown, but the intensity of his presence is achieved by the artist’s use of realism in the face. The body, with its heavy robes flowing over the chair, is more conventionalized.
