From the second half of the seventeenth century, women’s attire shifted from long, loose garments to tailored coats such as this one. Made of an outer shell of silk and metal-wrapped threads and executed in taqueté , the repeated design of floral sprigs alternates colors of peach and poppy orange. Appliqué forms outline a contrasting floral textile used for the borders. Probably inspired by European dress, the shape of the garment required several small pieces to be stitched together at the hips to form the rounded silhouette.
