The Lamentation of Christ

ca. 1513
Not on view
Until recently, this drawing in fragile condition was thought to have been a study by Baldung for a painted Lamentation (Landesmuseum Ferdinandeum, Innsbruck). It is now considered a copy of a lost Baldung drawing, which presumably was preparatory to the Innsbruck painting. The existence today of several other variant drawings related to the same picture attest to its broad popularity in the sixteenth century.
