Virgin and Child with an Apple and a Rose

German

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 304

This statuette depicts Jesus and his mother as the agents of human redemption. The rose Mary holds symbolizes her birth as that of the purest flower among the thorns of sin sown by Eve. The apple held by the blessing infant Jesus signifies his identity as the new Adam.
