Plaque from a Casket with a Dancing Woman

Coptic

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 302

Carved on one side of an animal bone, this rectangular plaque is incised with the image of a dancing woman from Dionysos’s entourage. Seen in profile with her hair swept back in a high bun, the dancer seems to catch the breeze, with foliate branches and loops of fabric swirling around her as she raises and lowers her arms.
