Face Jug

British

On view at The Met Cloisters in Gallery 10

Handled vessels made for easier pouring and drinking than shallow bowls. The bearded face found on many jugs suggests a perceived link between male virility and alcohol consumption. Glass goblets imported from Venice, highly prized and more fragile than ceramics, were associated with feminine traits.
