Whistler was considered one of the leading exponents of glass engraving at the middle of the twentieth century. He designed this goblet for the "British Artists in Crystal" exhibition held at the Steuben showroom in 1954. The catalogue describes his work as "a landscape fantasy of classic ruins. It might be a poet's dream of time's ravages, or an adaptation of a sketch made by the artist on a tour of Greece. What is certain is its power to make a past civilization live again."
