One of a pair, this chair was part of the suite of furniture George A. Schastey & Co. designed for William Clark’s drawing room. Originally outfitted with arm supports, this commodious chair contributed to a luxurious parlor. The marquetry passages of stylized flora on the crest and seat rail correlate to the ivy marquetry on the piano Schastey also made for Clark’s drawing room, in keeping with the Aesthetic taste. The distinctive rectangular brass insets and carved putti heads that frame the crest rail appeared elsewhere in Clark’s drawing room and are features favored by Schastey’s workshop.
