Church Model

Armenian

Not on view

This model depicts a type of Armenian domed church common from the seventh century. Four gabled facades form the square base of the structure, above which rises a cylindrical drum and conical roof. The compact cruciform plan of the model recalls early medieval churches but its elongated proportions are more typical of monuments built between the tenth and the thirteenth centuries. A small panel, perhaps made of wood or metal, may have once blocked the open cavity that might have held a relic.
