This miniature shows Gregory of Tat‘ev (Grigor Tat‘evats‘i), the headmaster of the university attached to the monastery of Tat‘ev in Greater Armenia, surrounded by his students. Founded in 1345 by Gregory and his teacher Yovhannes Orotnets‘i, this university developed into one of the most important intellectual centers in Armenia. This manuscript includes Gregory’s "Commentary on the Psalms" and a text by Yovhannes that concerns the martyrdom of Saint Gregory the Illuminator.
