Gospel Book

Grigor Tatevatsi Armenian

Not on view

In 1378, Gregory of Tat‘ev, an important theologian and writer, restored this manuscript that had been copied in 1297. An inscription asserts that he painted this Annunciation image. It makes innovative use of a jug in a niche to represent the well where traditionally the Archangel Gabriel announced to the Virgin that she would be the Mother of God. The elaborate floral-patterned manuscript cover indicates the importance of the work.
