Gospel with Canon Tables (Khoran) and Tholos

Armenian

Not on view

Armenian Gospel Books, like most medieval Christian ones, include a set of canon tables (khoran) that correlate the events in the life of Christ as described in the four Gospels. The sets of tables are placed under elaborate headpieces decorated with handsome columns, classical capitals, birds, and plants.

The canon tables conclude with a tholos, a circular domed building developed in antiquity that may represent the Holy Sepulchre, the site of Christ’s burial. The birds on the roof, the knotted curtain, and the trees flanking the building are standard design elements similar to those found in other Christian traditions.
