Gold Pyx

Armenian

Not on view

This pyx, used to hold the bread of the Eucharist, features the Last Supper and the Coronation of the Virgin in compositions inspired by Western European prototypes. The Last Supper, an image often found on a pyx, is from a woodcut by Christoffel van Sichem in the Armenian Oskan Bible; the Coronation’s source has yet to be identified. On the sides are the twelve apostles with the instruments of their martyrdom.
