T‘oros of Taron illuminated this sumptuous Bible for Esayi Nch‘ets‘i. The opening for the Book of Psalms stresses the role of the prophet David as its author and as an ancestor of Christ. David, playing a contemporary Armenian instrument, forms the first letter of the text. In the illumination, the prophet Samuel anoints David on the right and David’s head is at the center of the Tree of Jesse, a Western-inspired image depicting the ancestors of Christ, on the left.
