Gospel Book

Armenian

Not on view

Here, a sideways-oriented portrait of the four evangelists faces the first page of the Gospel of Matthew. The haloed figures rest their hands on staffs. The first page of the Gospel has a prominent headpiece filled with scrolling vines as often found in Armenian manuscripts. The first letter of the first word is transformed into a bird’s head and is followed by the text in erkat‘agir script in alternating lines of red and black ink.
