Gospel Book

Armenian

Not on view

Commissioned by Yohanes the priest, this manuscript was copied and illustrated by the esteemed Gregory of Khlat‘. On the left, a teacher, probably Gregory, holds a pointer and a board inscribed with Psalm 1:1, "Blessed is the man . . ." Yohanes and another student face Gregory. On the opposite page, Yohanes receives this Gospel Book from the white-bearded Gregory. The talismanic manuscript cover, embellished with eye-shaped amulets, protects the book against the evil eye.
