Ritual Book of Ordination (Dzernadrut'ean Mashtots')

Armenian

Not on view

This is the earliest surviving image of the ordination of a member of the Armenian clergy. The bishop, wearing a stole (omophorion) indicating his rank and a white pointed cowl (knkugh), holds a Gospel Book over the head of the priest or deacon being ordained. A related image is found in a manuscript of the Syriac Church, which is known to have had connections with Hromkla and Cilicia.
