Fragment of a Brocaded Silk

late 16th–early 17th century
Not on view
This triangular fragment was woven in the kemha technique using metal wrapped thread. A yellowish golden floral design is set against a black satin ground. Red and blue tones fillings and contours mark colorful accents to the design. The repertoire of motifs includes pomegranates, hyacinths, carnations, rose buttons, and tulips, and echoes the classical floral style of Ottoman imperial workshops. This fragment is representative of the fine brocaded silks that were crafted for elaborate caftans and other garments worn by the ruling elite or used in diplomatic gift exchanges.
