Khachkar

Armenian

Not on view

This khachkar is similar to the thirty-five small stone khachkars built into the walls and above the entrance to the church of Saint James, the oldest church in New Julfa, the wealthy Armenian residential district in Isfahan, the capital of the Safavid Persian Empire. The inscription reads, "This holy cross is a memorial from Jamp‘ase for Elisap‘et‘ [and] Aslum in the year 1090 [ad 1641]."
