Second Prince Vasak Gospel Book

Armenian

Not on view

The Virgin protectively spreads her mantle over the kneeling figures of Prince Vasak, half-brother of King Hetum I, and his sons Kostandin and Hetum as she presents them to Christ. Her pose here and in the Marshal Oshin Gospel Book (on view nearby) is similar to that of Duccio’s Madonna of the Franciscans and reflects the increasing prominence of the Franciscan Order in Sis.
