Model Book

Armenian

Not on view

This model book containing figures and motifs copied from disparate sources functioned as a teaching tool or memory aid for manuscript illuminators. On the left is an eagle-headed animal composed of birds, oxen, human heads, and other indeterminate beasts. The presence of this creature and other composite animals in later Armenian, Persian Safavid, and Hindu art points to a shared visual language facilitated by the function and portability of such books.
