Gospel Book
Not on view
Fantastical twisting dragons and human-headed harpies appear in these canon tables (khoran) from a Gospel Book written by the scribe Tser for his own use in 1311. Often identified as being a work from Tabriz, the Mongol capital, inscriptions reveal that one of its illuminators was T‘oros the deacon, an artist active at Gladzor. The book is documented as having reached Tabriz by 1444. Four previously unknown illuminations from the work are on view above.
