Gospel Book of Lady Keran and Prince Levon II
Illuminator Toros Roslin Armenian
Monastery of Hṙomkla
Not on view
T‘oros Roslin’s patron, Catholicos Konstandin I, commissioned this manuscript as a wedding gift for King Hetum I’s son, Prince Levon II, and his bride, Lady Keran. The prince may be holding the wedding gift. The young royals’ elaborate silk robes demonstrate Cilicia’s importance to the silk trade. Byzantine motifs—the image of the blessing Christ and the tablion on Levon’s mantle—indicate the kingdom’s ambition to be the East’s dominant Christian power.
