Design for the cover of the Austrian Illustrated Newspaper (Österreichs illustrierte Zeitung)

ca. 1910
Not on view
During the nineteenth century, illustrated newspapers became a principal source for images for a broad variety of subjects. Reports on and reviews of art exhibitions and fairs formed a frequent feature, and the images of historic and contemporary works of art were greedily used by artist as inspiration for their own work. During the second half of the century, many publishers therefore initiated separate issues and periodicals solely devoted to art. In Vienna, the great momentum gained by the foundation of the Secession Movement and the Wiener Werkstätte inspired various new publications, including a monthly art supplement that accompanied the Austrian Illustrated Newspaper since September 1907.
