Bowl

Armenian

Not on view

This bowl is made of mosaic glass, also known as millefiori (thousand flowers), a technique used in Mediterranean regions in antiquity. In the ninth century, mosaic glass was common in the Abbasid Empire at Samarra, their temporary capital. This work may have come to Dvin with one of the Armenian princes or naxarars (feudal lords) who had been held hostage at Samarra after the Abbasids captured Armenia. Those who survived returned to Armenia with gifts and enhanced status.
