Khachkar

Armenian

Not on view

Above the large cross at the center is Christ surrounded by the Virgin and Saint John the Baptist to form a Deesis. They in turn are flanked by angels. The rosette near the base is set in a separate square, a common feature on Julfan khachkars. The inscription on the rosette’s disk reads, "[May] this Holy Cross be a prayer to Christ for Suk‘ias. In the year 1586." The donor appears below as an unbearded figure with a halo, by the partially legible inscription, "Here rests Suk‘ias . . ." The bare base shows that this khachkar was planted directly into the ground like most Julfan khachkars, rather than being placed on a pedestal, as was standard practice in other Armenian communities.
