Girault first practiced the daguerreotype in France, where he made this assured self-portrait at his villa outside Langres. He presents himself not as a photographer, but with the attributes of an artist and scholar: a drawing stick and a bound folio album. The gilt lettering on its spine is illegible, but the book is likely a volume of Girault’s multipart illustrated history of Islamic architecture, completed after his initial travels (1831–35) through Italy, North Africa, and Spain
