In Not Conceptual, the artist Joseph Goldyne has humorously engaged recent art, creating a portfolio of prints that, using the very word "conceptual," argue in favor of the visual over the linguistic. To reinforce the artist's desire to "Remain receptive to images," Goldyne opens the portfolio with a colophon in which he affixed a detail of an eye and a mouth, juxtaposing looking at work versus talking about it. Goldyne also plays with language throughout the portfolio through the titles chosen for prints, his statements on the colophon and a separate "manifestoette," and the prints in which he makes words themselves--such as "conceptual" and "Sheraton"--the subject, unpacking their forms as well as the many words that can be created from a corporate brand. Other prints such as Art or Bust, "It May Be Beautiful, but That’s Just the Way it Looks," Cold Front, Switch, and "Fake" are beautifully produced drypoints, etchings, and aquatints that reveal Goldyne’s mastery of the various printmaking methods as well as knowledge of art history.
