Untitled, DR 1069
David Row American
Not on view
Untitled DR 1069 is characteristic of the artist’s decades-long fascination with what he terms the "slippery image." Most of Row’s works feature shapes that invite the viewer to complete the image in their mind, while also creating various possibilities for this attempt at resolution. This paradox is present in the shape at the center of this work. Its receding perspectival lines suggesting the three-dimensional nature of the object are contradicted by the flat surface on which it is rendered. Furthermore, the shape appears to be fractured by the thick black lines that dissect it, so that its distinct segments appear slightly mismatched. This quality reflects the importance Row has long ascribed to creating "openings" in the work that allow the viewer to complete it in their mind’s eye and that establish a tension between the parts of the shape and a projected whole.
