During the reign of Louis XIV, a three-cornered hat like this one became an indispensable accessory for the man of fashion. As wigs grew increasingly elaborate in the early eighteenth century, gentlemen wore their hats under the arm so as not to disrupt their coiffures. Carried in this manner, they became a test of elegant deportment and a required feature of French court dress.
