The architectural and decorative elements of this fragmentary stone—such as the stepped crenellations lining the upper edge, horseshoe arch within an alfiz (rectangular frame), and stylized vegetal embellishment—recall the exterior facade of the Great Mosque of Cordoba, attesting to the symbolic value that the mosque (the spiritual heart of al-Andalus) carried long past its period of creation, from the eighth to the tenth century. On this gravestone, the architectural framework partitions the inscriptions that include the confession of the faith on the outer border and, inside the arch, the beginning of a text praising God. In addition, the decoration within the frame reveals the enduring popularity in Iberia of the horseshoe arch, an indigenous form embraced by all faiths, which may be seen on several other objects in this gallery.
