White Bowl with a Blue Peacock

late 11th or 12th century
Not on view
This shallow bowl displays a carved medallion in the cavetto bearing a sophisticated carving of a peacock with a patterned body and wings with a beaded band, that is set against a background of scrolls. A blue in-glaze paint is contained within the peacock’s body, rather than flowing freely, making this vessel a rare example amongst 11th-12th-century white stonepaste wares.

A similar technique that uses carved lines to contain in-glaze coloring is today most often attributed to coeval Syria and named laqabi.
