Portrait of Mu’izz al-Mulk
Not on view
An inscription on the left side of this painting identifies the figure as Mu'izz al-Mulk, a Persian officer employed at the court of Mughal Emperors Akbar (r. 1556–1605) and Jahangir (r. 1605–27). His sumptous fur-trimmed, silk and brocaded garments reveal his elite status within the Mughal aristocracy, and records indicate that he held positions as book-keeper, paymaster, as well as high ranking administrative roles in the army. The style and positioning of the inscription is akin to other examples that have been signed by Jahangir himself, and it is possible that this caption is in his hand.
