This work of art is currently on loan to the museum.
The talented young Wen Fong wrote this couplet when he was just twelve years old. The squiggly, uniform lines appear in seal script, one of the oldest forms of Chinese calligraphy. Fong’s teacher, Li Jian, saw the study of ancient models as the foundation of proper training. The couplet reads:

Solitary pleasure is no match for shared pleasure;
In placing demands on myself, I needn’t place demands on others.
