Large Boston Public Garden Sketchbook: A crowd watching fireworks
Prendergast uses thin washes of color to lay in this image of figures in a park and an evening sky all ablaze. The firework display is wonderfully handled in vertical bands of spatial narrative, extending across a page spread. The artist has blotted his sheet in areas of light to suggest even greater luminosity.
