Seurats Studie seines Freundes, des Künstlers Edmond François Aman-Jean (1860–1936) gehört zu den großen Portraitzeichnungen des 19. Jhds. Aman-Jean und Seurat studierten gemeinsam Kunst in Paris, wo sie sich 1879 auch ein Atelier teilten. Die Zeichnung wurde im Pariser Salon von 1883 gezeigt und war die erste öffentlich ausgestellte Arbeit des damals 23-jährigen Künstlers. Seurats eigene Technik mit Conté-Stift auf texturiertem Papier zu zeichnen, verleiht dem Werk seine Leuchtkraft und tonale Harmonie und die klassisch balancierte Pose des Künstlers im Profil vermittelt eine dauerhafte, zeitlose Qualität.
