この小さいながら強烈な印象のマリリン・モンローのプリントは、ウォーホルの『マリリン』と題された10枚の大型シルクスクリーン印刷のポートフォリオの出版を発表するチラシとして郵送されたものです。作品でウォー ホルは、モンローの1953年の映画『ナイアガラ』の広告写真に手を加え、女優の顔を蛍光色で印刷しました。商業用のスクリーン印刷技法で刷られたポートフォリオの作品は、それぞれ異なる色が重ねられ、さらにスクリーン印刷技術の変用によって印版をずらして大量印刷されました。ウォーホルが商業用の技法を取り入れたことで、モンローは手の届かないセックスシンボルから、お金さえ出せば誰にも手に入る商品に変貌したのです。
