Während ihm eine alte Zigeunerin die Zukunft voraussagt, wird ein naiver Jüngling von ihren Komplizen ausgeraubt. Dies war unter Caravaggisten in ganz Europa im 17. Jh. ein äußerst beliebtes Thema. La Tours Gemälde wurde theatralisch betrachtet womöglich als eine Anspielung auf die Parabel des verlorenen Sohnes konzipiert. In der Beschriftung ist auch der Name der Stadt Lunéville in Lothringen aufgeführt, wo La Tour lebte.
