Hans Memling war der führende Maler in Brügge von 1465 bis zu seinem Tod 1494. Diese Porträts zeigen Tommaso und Maria Portinari, Mitglieder der großen italienischen Handelsgemeinde in Brügge, wo Tommaso von 1465 bis 1478 einen Zweig der Banco Medici leitete. Sie zählen zu den Meisterwerken der Renaissance-Kunst im Norden und wurden wahrscheinlich zur Eheschließung des Paares 1470 in Auftrag gegeben, als Maria etwa vierzehn Jahre alt war und Tommaso etwa zweiundvierzig. Die Gemälde bildeten ursprünglich die Flügel eines transportablen Triptychons um ein Andachtsbild der Jungfrau mit Kind.
