Vase with ovoid bowl and gold knop

Manufacturer Whitefriars Glassworks British
ca. 1880–1930
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 516
With their reverence for craftsmanship, traditional working methods, their prizing of form through function, and above all their openly acknowledged mission to develop British glass production and style, James Powell & Sons and their Whitefriars Glassworks became a recognized standard-bearer for British design from the second half of the nineteenth century onward. This vase belongs to a group of Venetian-inspired vessels produced by James Powell & Sons from the 1870s through the 1930s, which came to be categorized in the manufactory’s catalogue sheets as "vases with gold leaf in the stems". With its clean lines and flawless execution, the vase is a fine example of the Whitefriars Glasswork’s production in this area.
