Portrait of En no Gyōja

En no Gyōja (634–700/707) is the legendary founder of Shugendō, the mountain ascetic tradition that integrates esoteric Buddhist practice with long standing Japanese forms of sacred mountain worship. Although his historical biography is obscured by legend, medieval texts portray him as an ascetic of extraordinary spiritual power who disciplined himself in the peaks of Katsuragi, Yoshino, and Ōmine. Over time he became venerated as a mountain saint and credited with supernatural abilities. Here he is depicted seated in a rugged mountain setting, surrounded by an unusually complete retinue of holy figures and animals. At his side stand the two guardian spirits Zenki 前鬼 (red) and Goki後鬼 (bluish green), while eight youthful attendants (八大童子 Hachi dai kōji) gather around him together with a tiger and a lion. The background is rendered with striking detail, with a tall waterfall plunging between rocky cliffs, trees rising in layered masses, clouds drifting through the mid distance, and distant peaks capped with snow. The scene situates him within the remote mountain where his spiritual training was believed to have taken place. This work relates closely to another rare the iconographic painting of En no Gyōja from the Havemeyer bequest (29.100.442) and images of Zao Gongen (e.g., 1975.268.155) from the Packard Collection.

Edo-period literati painters participated as in Shugendō, including Ike no Taiga, Kō Fuyō, and Kan Tenju. In particular, Yokoi Kinkoku was active as a Shugendō practitioner.
