This statuette is most likely a portrait of a dog, perhaps a smooth-coated fox terrier, owned by Ella Mabel Clark, the donor of this work. It recalls the British tradition of commissioning portraits of one's horses and dogs. The collared pet is depicted lying down, a ball between its forelegs. Roth was adept at modeling portraits of individual animals, including his best known, a life-size statue of a Siberian husky, "Balto" (1925; Central Park, New York).
