The Westtown Boarding School, founded in 1799, exists to this day. Run by Quakers, the well-respected school provided both girls and boys with a strong academic education. At the time it was founded, the curriculum was largely the same for both sexes, though girls spent less time on arithmetic and considerably more time on sewing. Samplers made at Quaker schools tended to be utilitarian, like this exercise in pattern marking, rather than intentionally decorative.
